From Alpha to Beta: Making the World Playable
Share
The Alpha of A Dreamer’s Tale reaches roughly 525 pages. It includes rules, setting material, game-master guidance, a Pilot Story and an adventure. That gives the project a substantial body of work to develop into a publication.
The Beta revision has progressed through material up to page 245, including Core Rules, Realspace Combat, Operations, Equipment and Vehicles. It revises the Alpha rather than adding another separate book of that size. Page numbers describe the working manuscript; final book lengths will follow the revised structure.
Revision means making decisions
A world can contain many ideas. A roleplaying game also needs consistent procedures, examples that agree with those procedures, and information readers can find when they need it.
The Beta work brings those elements together. It examines how a rule connects to the rest of the system, how equipment depends on operations and combat, and how Realspace provides the basis for Dreamspace. Character creation and opposition need to fit the completed Dreamspace procedures as well.
Existing Alpha passages provide concepts and material for that work. They remain developmental sources: an attractive page can contain an older rule, and a worked example does not establish that a group has successfully played it.
Two books with different jobs
The planned Core Rulebook gives players the rules and the perspective available to their characters, including the world as shaped by Scara’s presentation. The Game Master’s Guide contains the fuller world explanation, secrets, opposition, tools and tables.
This separation protects discoveries while keeping the information needed to run the game together. The adventure and Pilot Story are planned as separate booklets.
How I work with AI
I use ChatGPT to assist with text drafts, rule development and illustrations. I supply the concept and direction, choose what belongs in the game, make the rule decisions and revise the results. I personally review every sentence and image I use and take responsibility for the published material.
That review includes asking whether a passage says what I intended, whether a procedure fits the game’s other decisions, and whether an illustration expresses the world I am building. AI assistance is part of the process; the choices and responsibility remain mine.
The next quality checks
External playtesting has not yet taken place. Organizing those sessions, revising from their results, and commissioning professional English editing and proofreading are part of the path to publication.
The free Development Preview shows selected Introduction, Alpha, Combat and Vehicle material with development-status notes. It is a look at the work in progress, not a complete playable ruleset. This log will add explanations of the decisions behind those pages.
